Our Story

Songwriting drew Catherine and Henry together. Before they were even married, Henry composed a poem, and Catherine set it to music. Before they knew it, the choir was singing the song as an offertory on Sunday at church. Though they have had seasons of fruit and fallow, they always come back to working together, because that’s how God’s wired them. Catherine is a classically-trained pianist with formal education in music and worship, and Henry has a knack for words and enjoys playing trumpet.
When they married, Catherine planned an eclectic musical worship service featuring an opera singer, a friend’s composition for clarinet and voice, a harpsichordist, a pianist, and a violist. This love for musical variety has only continued as Catherine has explored writing music in folk, blues, neo-classical, and contemporary styles. In 2013 they began their greatest creative work—parenting—and now have three rambunctious and creative young boys.
2020 was a pivotal year for Catherine and Henry. Prior to the world shutting down for COVID, they attended a songwriting retreat that emphasized approaching the creative process as a partnership with the Holy Spirit. Catherine and Henry began to see their art as a worshipful response to God’s leading. This shift in mindset has propelled their artistic endeavors ever since.
Collaboration is a key ingredient to Catherine and Henry’s creations. Almost every time they have tried to write a song or a devotional independently, it has failed. The reason why they share credit on so many songs and written resources is because their best work is the fruit of a longer (and often frustrating!) process of drafting, reviewing, and refining until they both feel the work is ready. This collaborative process has also included a loose network of friends and artists who lend their input. Receiving and incorporating outside feedback has resulted in creative works that reflect not only Catherine and Henry’s gifts but also the larger body of Christ to which they are connected. It is a beautiful display of how Jesus’s Church is designed to be.
Catherine and Henry’s path has taken them through a wide variety of experiences, from living in an arts neighborhood, to writing music for a family Bible camp, to leading worship in a Brazilian favela. Each step has prepared them for the next. During a season when they were picking up groceries from a local food bank, a missionary couple encouraged them that this experience was kind of like spiritual boot camp—training that was purposefully difficult to build up their resilience and trust in God for later ministry.
This is the end of our about section, dear reader, which means that it is the beginning of our journey with you. We pray our art and services encourage you to pursue Jesus and keep asking him what he wants you to create.
